Around the World in 80 Days – Introduction

We have been racking up our airline miles for a while, with the goal of using them to fly First/Business Class to/from Asia. We have been working out the details of our trip since March 2016. The trip started off as a desire to see Thailand, Philippines and the Maldives. It then grew to include Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, China and of course we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit our favorite country, Japan.

Starting in Los Angeles, our trip looks like the below image. Our travel, in airport code, is as follows: LAX-HKG-PEK-HND-HKG-DPS-SIN-MNL-PPS;ENI-CEB;TAG-MNL-BKK-CNX-HKT-BKK-CMB-MLE-AUH-JFK-ORD-LAX. There are 20 flights, plus a ferry and a long van ride.

The routing we will be following

After our routing was selected, we had to figure out what flights would let us accomplish this using our miles & points wisely. We had, between the two of us, a huge balance of American Airlines miles and Hilton points. Along with targeted spending, Credit Card Bonuses and selected hotel stays for my work, we were able to be setup very well. We also had a deadline to book many of our flights, as March 22, 2016 American Airlines increased their mileage redemption costs.

With regards to flying, our main goal was to arrive and depart Asia in First/Business Class using miles and to use miles & points to fly throughout Asia in Business/Economy Class. Basically, we wanted to be able to sleep comfortably on the way, and not spend much on any of our flights. In a separate post, we will share what the RETAIL costs were compared to what we paid. We’ll also share how we were able to get so much of our trip for next to nothing.

We plan on documenting this trip like never before, including Blog Posts that discuss our flights, hotels, cuisine, activities and our First Impressions. We will also be sharing various pictures and videos on our Social Media Accounts. Make sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook to see the latest.
