“You don’t get what you deserve, you only get what you ask for”

A couple of years ago, someone told us this quote, “You don’t get what you deserve, you only get what you ask for.” Wayne Gretzky said it this way, “You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take.” This has proved to be so true, especially in traveling. While we no longer live in the days of asking for a first-class seat and getting it, a lot of things can still be provided just by asking.

Case-In-Point: We were looking into booking a 1-night stay at the Waldorf Astoria-Beverly Hills due to an event we would be attending close by. When we first looked, there was availability for the standard room at 95,000 point per night. We were waiting for points to post from a previous stay, and once they did, we returned to book and the points required were now 282,000 for the same standard room. We had just read an article that Miles Per Day had written about asking the hotel to open up availability. This is where our quote kicks in. I emailed the hotel and asked if they could open up space, especially as it was just 95,000 a couple of days before. They replied by saying, “we would be delighted to make that available for you.” They then booked the room for us at the 95,000 point level.

So remember, if you want something, (i.e. car rental upgrade, suite upgrade, early check in, late check out, etc.) ask for it. If you don’t ask, you’re basically not taking the figurative shot, and you’ll miss every single time.
