SPG Experience – Monster Jam Triple Threat Series (Bucket List)
After some family members went to a Monster Truck show, we decided that we wanted to go too, and therefore added it to our growing Bucket List. So, we were happy to see SPG/Marriott put up an experience for points purchase (30,000 Marriott/10,000 SPG) points to enjoy Monster Jam at Staples Center… in a fully loaded suite! Here is the description from the website:
- Seats in the custom Luxury Suite to seeMonster Jam® Triple Threat™ Series at STAPLES Center on August 17, 2018 at 7:30 pm
- Complimentary food and beverages while in the suite
- Experience is for two people
We received the tickets, per new policy for Staples Center events, 24 hours before the event. We arrived at the event around 6:45pm and parked in our typical Staples Center nearby parking lot. (It’s cheaper than other lots and super convenient for exiting.) The arena was pretty empty at 7pm, but our suite already had two families in their seats (7 total.) James was our host and was honestly the best host we’ve had in our four total Staples Center events. He was warm, courteous and generously hospitable. He came around to everyone several times throughout the night to see if there was anything we needed or top off our wine glasses. He was very personable and engaged all in conversation but at the same time, knew when to leave the guests to enjoy the event. (FYI: Marriott/SPG, if you’re reading this, we would love to be hosts for events in the Suite.) James also alerted us to the timing of the dessert cart to make sure everyone would be ready. For the dessert cart, each person can take one item. We shared the Rockslide Brownie Bar, which was super delicious and rich, and also took a Caramel Apple to go. I believe all the kids in the suite (5 by last count) took Cotton Candy as their dessert.
This event was very unique as it was the first time Monster Jam has ever performed in Staples Center. To walk in and see that the “court” had been converted into dirt was amazing. It was a lot of fun to watch the trucks speed around the course and to watch the freestyle events where they did a lot of tricks. Several trucks also incurred damage, flipped on their side or suffered engine trouble. So one of the tractors with a hitch was used frequently. Thinking about the event in retrospect brings a smile to our faces. It truly was a lot of fun, and having the perks of the suite made it even better.
It was interesting to note that while no guests under the age of 6 are permitted in the suite, this was the first time we’ve seen kids of any age (10, 12, 13 are my guesses) in the suite, as we haven’t seen kids for a Lakers or Kings game. The other observation is that the alcohol preference is different for each event. At the Kings game, every guest was drinking wine. For the Lakers game and Monster Jam, beer was the beverage of choice. That said, at this event, there seemed to be healthier options for food with Fajitas and a Quinoa salad being offered. We gladly welcomed these options and hope to see them at future events.
Thus far we have thoroughly enjoyed each event SPG has hosted in a suite at Staples Center. We look forward to continuing to use our points for these experiences in the future and can’t wait to see what our next one will be. Stay tuned!
